A full-body silicone baby is more than just a doll; it is a work of art. Because I use a specialized soft-blend platinum silicone for 80% of my creations at Joanna Reborn Dolls, they require specific care to stay beautiful for years to come.
If you have just adopted your first silicone “silky” baby, here is how to keep them in pristine condition.
1. Handling and Posing
Silicone is incredibly soft, which is why it feels so real, but it can be delicate.
- Support the Head: Just like a real newborn, always support the head.
- Avoid Stretching: While silicone is flexible, avoid over-stretching the fingers, toes, or limbs, as this can put stress on the “skin” over time.
2. The Importance of Bathing (And Drying)
One of the best features of a full-body silicone baby is that they can be submerged in water, but you must be careful:
- Use Lukewarm Water: Never use hot water. A gentle dip in lukewarm water with a tiny drop of mild baby soap is all they need.
- Pat, Don’t Rub: When drying, never rub the silicone with a towel. Gently pat the skin dry. Rubbing can eventually wear down the delicate layers of matte paint.
3. Dealing with “Lint” and Dust
Silicone is naturally “tacky” (slightly sticky), which means it attracts lint from clothes and blankets.
- The Secret Tool: A soft, high-quality makeup brush. Use it to gently brush away dust from the creases of the eyes, ears, and toes.
- Matting Powder: If your baby starts to feel “grabby” or shiny, apply a light coating of professional silicone matting powder (or high-quality cornstarch-based baby powder) using a large powder puff.
4. Choosing the Right Clothing
- Avoid Dark Dyes: Dark blue jeans or cheap black fabrics can “stain” silicone. Always wash new doll clothes before putting them on your baby to ensure the dye doesn’t transfer.
- Easy Dressing: Because silicone doesn’t “slide” like vinyl, a little bit of powder helps the limbs glide into long sleeves easily.
5. Hair Care (Rooted Mohair)
Most of my babies feature premium hand-rooted mohair. To keep it soft:
- Use a soft-bristled baby brush or a clean toothbrush.
- You can use a tiny drop of leave-in conditioner mixed with water to style the hair, but avoid getting the silicone “skin” too wet around the roots.
